When I was a little girl one of my most beloved books was The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter by Evelyn Scott.
If you aren't familiar with the book, it is a sweet story about a family of bears.
But, the reason I loved it so much was because the bears lived in charming tree houses, decorated to each bear's specific design taste.
The illustrator, Virginia Parsons, did a beautiful job depicting the style of each bear. I loved looking at the rooms, choosing the ones I liked best, and imagining what my house would be like someday. (Some things never change!)
One of my favorite rooms was the bedroom with the alcove bed.
I would daydream about how wonderful it would be to nestle into that soft, cozy little nook.
Like I said, some things never change.
I still like to daydream ...
What do you think? Does an alcove bed seem like a good spot to hibernate?
BTW, if you have a little person in your life who would be interested in The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter, you might want to check it out at your local library. Apparently the book is no longer in print, and sells online for upwards of 300 bucks... ouch!
Carolyn, I know every kid would want an alcove bed...well I am an old lady and I loved all the choices.Smiles, Susie
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful place to curl up on a rainy afternoon like today. We're finally getting the remnants of Isaac which has now turned into a gentle rain.
ReplyDeleteI would love to spend hours with a good book in any one of those private nooks. They are such cozy places to unwind and be at peace.
ReplyDelete$300 for the book? Ouch is right! Seems like a sweet book though.
I have always loved those types of beds. They are perfectly wonderful, aren't they? I have saved several of those to my files over time.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of that book but I am going to look it up now- xo Diana
I'm trying to remember if I ever read those books, but can't recall. I hope you hung on to yours knowing how much they're worth now! Those are some great alcove beds you featured.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book! I've always loved alcove beds and remember the old lady who owned the summer cottage next to my parents invited us in when I was a kid. She had 2 alcove beds and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I'd still love one.
ReplyDeleteThe book looks like one I should read to my grands. And those beds. A new image came to mind with each new photo. A day of dreaming about each bed is a book of it's own.
ReplyDeleteOk I will comment on this. I guess I should have known I had a bad decorating sense since childhood, judging from which bear's room I liked the best. BTW, if that book is $300, I think it was mine. You can keep Grandma's cut glass.
ReplyDeleteAlrighty, you have got me drooling all over my laptop! All of these beds have a sense of coziness to me. Ahhh, and I LOVE the bear story.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pics. You've been so good about blogging. I haven't done much at all. I love your pics and stories. Can you come to my house and inject a little pretty in it?
ReplyDeleteI also loved 14 Bears Summer and Winter and the built in bed bear was also my favorite! Thank you for posting this. Just last week I tried to find the book on Amazon. It costs over 100$ now!!!! I remember just loving looking at how all the different bears decorated.
