We're playing a game of musical beds at our house. My oldest son is getting his own room since he starts middle school this year and will be getting up earlier than the other kids. He's taking over the "baby" room...
The "baby" and son #3 moved into the room previously occupied by sons 1 and 2, and son 2 moved into son 3's room. Got all that? Me neither.
So the boys and I spent 6 hours moving everyone's stuff from one room to another. Everybody better be happy in their new beds, because we're not doing this again for at least another 10 years.
Now that the hard work is over, I'm really excited about decorating my first "tween" room... the first kids' room without cars, dinosaurs or pirates.
I asked my son what he would like in his new room. He said, "a bed and a table next to the bed." Well, alrighty then. I can handle that.
As you can see in these photos, the room is oddly-shaped, so I need to carefully plan the furniture layout and edit anything that isn't necessary and useful.
I've been pinning inspiration photos like crazy, so I'll share those with you over the next few days.
Have you decorated a tween room? Any suggestions??
Well, he is easy to please. A bed and a table and he's happy. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteYour son's specifications just cracked me up! I had a son who asked for weird things like "a chinese latern", "paint the trim the colours of the LA Lakers uniforms", or "turn my old broken skateboard into a shelf"!
ReplyDeleteI find that their taste changes and develops a lot in the tween years, so it's best to do things that allow for quick changes.
I like that kid!!! You will make it awesome! I wish I had suggestions, but I am of no help having one little girl. I am all about princesses!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking room, love that you get so much natural light. As far as advice, just be sure its sometihng he can grow with until he gets to college.....masculine touches like wood, touches of navy, maybe some prints that reflect his interestes to personalize it a bit.....look forward to seeing what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteI have! I love PBTeen for tweens - their stuff IS really cool! What a great space you have to work with!

Try to build a room that he can grow into and he will enjoy. Have fun with it.
ReplyDeleteYes, just did my oldest son who is going into 5th. We did a pale grey on the walls. Got a fun shaggy, chevron blue, orange, and grey rug. The rug was our inspiration and we used those colors. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteOh, and the rug was from PB Teen.
ReplyDeleteWe did light gray also (Silver Mist from Behr) and as my boys were sharing a room they each got to choose their color 'pops'. Now however we are moving and we will have to start all over. I did like the frame I turned into a magnet board, and another frame I turned into a board with mesh fencing pieces. But really I think it comes down to identifying a masculine theme that will feel right. Don't go for cutesy or matchy-matchy. Instead look for pieces that will give you an overall feeling.
ReplyDeleteI know--clear as mud!
I'm sure you will have fun decorating a new room for him. I bet you could find some cute ideas from Pottery Barn Teen too. Using masculine, neutral colors (maybe even some plaid) would probably be a good start. That's such an interesing shaped room, that I bet it will look great when it's done!
